Bagasse clamshell containers may pass a simple sample review but still fail in bulk distribution. The most common problems appear during stacking, carton compression, vibration, warehouse handling, and final delivery: lids deform, locking tabs loosen, hinges crease, cartons crush, and nested products lose shape before they reach the customer.

Start With the Real Distribution Route

Transport testing should match the route. A carton shipped by parcel courier, a pallet moved by truck, and a full container shipped by sea do not face the same risks. Empty clamshells should be tested for nesting stability, lid memory, rim shape, and carton fit. Loaded clamshells should be tested with the actual food or a representative dummy load. Both tests matter because clamshells can pass empty stacking but deform when hot meals create steam and pressure.

Carton Compression and Pallet Load

For overseas shipments, the carton protects the clamshell as much as the clamshell protects the food. Vibration can loosen nested stacks, rub product surfaces, and create dust or edge wear inside the carton. Drop Testing for Export Cartons

Drop testing helps reveal whether a carton and inner packing can protect clamshell containers from handling shock. ASTM D5276 covers free-fall drop testing for loaded containers, including boxes, cylindrical containers, bags, and sacks, as described on the official ASTM D5276 page.

For bagasse clamshells, inspect both the carton and the products after the drop. A carton corner dent may be acceptable if the inner products remain sellable. Broken locks, crushed rims, permanently warped lids, or shifted stacks should trigger packing revision before shipment.

How to Judge Sea Freight Readiness

A clamshell package is better suited for long-distance sea freight when the product, inner stack, carton, pallet, and container loading plan work together. Buyers should confirm:

  • Clamshells nest cleanly without excessive pressure.
  • Lids and locking points recover after carton packing.
  • Cartons resist expected stacking load and humidity exposure.
  • Vibration does not create heavy edge wear or product dust.
