Industrial composting is a managed environment. It normally involves controlled temperature, moisture, oxygen, microbial activity, and processing time. Seawater is different. Temperature, salinity, oxygen, sunlight, sediment, and microbial activity vary by location and season. A package that can compost in an industrial facility should not automatically be described as biodegradable in seawater.

Standard PLA, however, should not be described as biodegradable in seawater without marine-specific proof.

PHA has stronger potential in certain natural-environment biodegradation discussions, depending on its grade and structure. Buyers should never assume that a resin-level claim covers every finished package.

Fragmentation Is Not Biodegradation

One common mistake is to treat cracking, brittleness, or visual disappearance as biodegradation. Fragmentation only means the material has become smaller. True biodegradation requires microbial conversion of organic carbon under specific environmental conditions.

For packaging buyers, this distinction matters. A cracked film, brittle cup, or broken tray may still leave persistent fragments. Photos of damaged samples are not enough. Weight loss alone may also be insufficient unless the method clearly measures biological conversion. This is why the test report, not only the product claim, should be reviewed before a buyer accepts marine wording.

What Buyers Should Ask Before Accepting a Marine Claim

Before using marine biodegradability wording on a product page, carton, label, or sales deck, buyers should request a clear evidence package from the supplier.
